Senior School

Senior Phase (Ages 13–16)

The Senior Phase at Harrow School represents a decisive stage in a student’s academic journey. Building on the strong foundations established during the Prep Phase, the Senior School curriculum is designed to be increasingly rigorous, challenging and intellectually stimulating, with a clear focus on preparation for internationally recognised public examinations.

During this phase, students are encouraged to develop academic maturity, subject specialism and independent learning skills as they work towards the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (iGCSE), typically taken in Year 11.

An Academically Rigorous and Broad Curriculum

The Senior School offers a rich and carefully structured curriculum that balances academic depth with subject breadth. All subjects are taught by specialist teachers who are experts in their fields and passionate about inspiring excellence.

Subjects offered in the Senior Phase include:

Art & Design, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Chinese, Computing, Drama, Economics, Geography, History, English Literature, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Music, Physics.

This wide range of subjects allows students to explore diverse academic interests while gradually developing areas of strength and passion.

Focused Preparation for iGCSE Success

As students progress through the Senior Phase, teaching and learning become increasingly focused on the knowledge, skills and examination techniques required for iGCSE success. Lessons are intellectually stretching and carefully sequenced to ensure conceptual understanding, analytical thinking and academic confidence.

Students are challenged to:

  • Think critically and analytically across disciplines
  • Apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts
  • Communicate ideas clearly in written, oral and practical forms
  • Develop effective revision strategies and examination resilience

Regular assessment, feedback and academic mentoring support students in achieving their personal best while maintaining high expectations.

Inspiring Passion Beyond the Classroom

Senior School faculties design dynamic educational programmes that extend learning beyond traditional classroom boundaries. Through project-based learning, enrichment activities, competitions, performances and real-world applications, students are encouraged to develop a genuine passion for their subjects.

This approach enables students to:

  • See connections between subjects and the wider world
  • Develop creativity, innovation and problem-solving skills
  • Engage deeply with their chosen areas of study
  • Build confidence and intellectual curiosity

Preparation for Sixth Form and Beyond

The Senior School curriculum provides a strong and purposeful platform for progression into the Sixth Form. By the end of Year 11, students have developed the academic discipline, independent study skills and self-awareness required to make informed subject choices for advanced study.

Graduates of the Senior Phase leave as resilient, reflective learners, well prepared to thrive in the academic challenges of Sixth Form and equipped with the confidence and clarity to pursue their future aspirations.
