Head Master’s Address
Speech Day 2025

Daniel Berry
Head Master,
Harrow Shenzhen
As we gather to celebrate the close of another remarkable year, we take a moment to reflect on all we have accomplished together — and to look forward to all that lies ahead. This has been a year of incredible triumphs, in the face of significant change and challenge. Standing still was never an option; we embraced the new, built on strong foundations, and watched the first cohort of our graduates prepare to leave their mark on the world.
The spirit of pioneering and leading has defined our journey over the past five years. While many schools attempt rapid transformation, true, lasting change requires thoughtful planning, deep roots, and a shared vision. Having been a Headmaster for fifteen years, I know that success is not measured by short-term gains but by the lasting impact we leave. Many institutions claim overnight revolutions, but true excellence — the kind that endures — is crafted patiently, with care and wisdom. Our journey has been centuries in the making, with this past year standing as a proud milestone.
Some of this year’s highlights include:
Record-Breaking Academic Results:
We are poised to celebrate the best combined A Level and IGCSE results in the school’s modern history — indeed, the best overall results the school has ever achieved. Since 2020, we have pursued excellence with determination, and the Class of 2025 has brought that vision to life. Their university and college offers reflect the extraordinary work of our pupils and staff alike.
Growing Strength in Numbers:
Our community has flourished, reaching record enrolments and even waiting lists in some year groups. Yet, we remain steadfast in preserving what makes our school special: small class sizes, a personalised approach, and the close-knit, family feel that defines us.
Innovation at the Forefront:
Significant investments in technology have transformed our classrooms, ensuring our teaching and learning practices remain world-class. Our commitment to blending cutting-edge resources with our family ethos ensures that innovation serves, rather than replaces, the human touch at the heart of education.
A Community Built to Last:
We continue to welcome talented new staff while proudly retaining those who have been part of our story for years. In an era when stability can be rare, it is the dedication of our people — teachers, pupils, and parents — that creates a culture many schools strive to emulate but few can match. Education, at its heart, is a simple thing when done right: it is a partnership, a shared journey, and a celebration of potential.
As we move forward, we do so with gratitude, pride, and an unshakable belief in what we can achieve together.
