Prep School

Prep Phase (Ages 11–13)

The Prep Phase at Harrow School is a pivotal stage in a pupil’s educational journey, carefully designed to bridge the transition from early learning to the intellectual demands of the Senior School. Modelled on the very best practices of leading British preparatory schools and international middle schools, our curriculum combines academic rigour with breadth, balance and personal development.

At this stage, pupils are encouraged to deepen their curiosity, strengthen their independence and develop the habits of confident, reflective learners.

A Broad and Balanced Academic Programme

Prep School pupils benefit from specialist teaching across all subjects, ensuring depth of knowledge, subject expertise and high academic expectations.

Core subjects form the foundation of the curriculum and include:

  • English– developing advanced literacy, critical reading, articulate writing and confident oral communication
  • Mathematics– strengthening problem-solving skills, logical reasoning and mathematical fluency
  • Science– fostering enquiry through practical investigation, experimentation and analytical thinking
  • Mandarin– building linguistic accuracy, cultural understanding and confident communication in a global context

Alongside the core curriculum, pupils study a wide range of foundation and enrichment subjects, including:

  • Art
  • Computing
  • Drama
  • Geography
  • History
  • Music
  • Physical Education

This broad curriculum ensures pupils receive a holistic education, nurturing creativity, physical wellbeing and intellectual curiosity alongside academic excellence.

Developing Independence and Scholarly Habits

As pupils progress through the Prep Phase, they are gradually guided to assume greater responsibility for their learning. Lessons place increasing emphasis on:

  • Independent thinking and research
  • Organisation and time management
  • Collaboration and respectful debate
  • Reflection and self-improvement

Teaching approaches are designed to promote scholarly habits, encouraging pupils to question, analyse, evaluate and articulate ideas with confidence and clarity.

Preparation for the Senior Phase

The Prep School curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils are fully prepared for the academic rigour and expectations of the Senior Phase. Through structured challenge and personalised support, pupils develop the essential skills required for future success, including resilience, adaptability and a strong work ethic.

By the end of the Prep Phase, pupils are confident learners who are intellectually curious, academically well-prepared and ready to thrive in the next stage of their Harrow education.
