This Mid-Autumn Festival,
our children didn’t just hear about
a traditional Chinese celebration —
they got to experience it for themselves.
We were delighted to host the first Come Learn With Us session of the new school year — a special opportunity for parents to step into their children’s learning journey and experience it together.
This time, our session celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival, with parents joining their children for a morning of festive fun, hands-on activities and shared discovery.
Through carefully designed learning experiences, families explored the stories, traditions and cultural meaning behind this much-loved festival — learning about Chinese traditions and local culture not just by listening, but by experiencing them together.
From making and creating to simply enjoying time together,
it was a lovely reminder
that sometimes the best way
to learn about a culture
is to take part in it.
The Mid-Autumn celebrations continued across the Lower School, with each year group exploring a different traditional craft — giving our children plenty of opportunities to discover Chinese culture through their own hands.

Traditional Chinese Painting
Our youngest learners explored the colours, patterns and creativity of traditional Chinese painting, creating their own colourful pieces along the way.

Year 3 | Woven Lanterns
Year 3 students got hands-on with weaving, creating lanterns while discovering how traditional crafts can turn simple materials into something beautiful.

Paper Mooncakes
A creative take on one of the festival’s most recognisable symbols — Year 4 made colourful paper mooncakes, bringing plenty of imagination to this much-loved tradition.

Year 5 | Mid-Autumn
Mooncake Gift Boxes
Year 5 explored the tradition of giving and sharing during Mid-Autumn, creating their own mooncake gift boxes — a little something made with care and ready to be shared.

Year 6 | Rabbit Lanterns
And for Year 6, it was all about the rabbit lanterns! With their charming connection to Mid-Autumn traditions, these lanterns brought a little extra magic to the celebrations.
A much-loved annual tradition at Harrow Shenzhen, our Lower School Mooncake Making Activity brought students and parents together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.
With wonderful support from our Operations Team, families rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in!
Little hands got busy shaping and making mooncakes, turning a familiar festival tradition into something they could see, touch and taste.
From working with the dough to adding their own little touches, our young learners enjoyed every step of the process — and, of course, the best part was proudly tasting their very own creations together.
And the celebration didn’t stop in the classroom.
For this special festival, our School Catering Team created a unique menu inspired by the flavours and traditions of Mid-Autumn, giving students the chance to experience some very special Chinese festive dishes.
With children from different nationalities and cultures coming together at Harrow Shenzhen, food became another simple but meaningful way to connect.
Different backgrounds, different stories, but one shared taste of China.
It was lovely to see children from around the world sitting together, trying something new and sharing a little piece of Chinese culture through food.
After all, sometimes a culture can be discovered not only through stories and traditions, but also one bite at a time.

Chinese culture is an important part of our children’s experience at Harrow Shenzhen, and we love giving them opportunities to discover it in a way that feels natural, meaningful and fun.
Because sometimes,
the best way to get to know a culture
is simply to join in —
make something with your
own hands, hear the stories behind
a tradition, try something new,
and share it with others.
From mooncake making to family activities, this was a lovely reminder that culture is best understood through experience.
And yes… there were plenty of mooncakes, too!
