The June breeze swept past
Harrow Shenzhen’s clock tower,
ruffling the hems of the graduates’ gowns.
One by one,
the Class of 2026 students
descended the steps and walked steadily
into the hall. Parents, teachers,
and younger students lined the sides,
presenting them with flowers and applause.
In that moment,
time itself seemed to slow down.

Graduates,
Today, you stand at the beginning of a remarkable journey. You have spent years preparing for this moment, and now the world stretches out before you—full of possibility, uncertainty, challenge, and opportunity.
As you leave this place, I’d like to offer a simple piece of advice:
Keep the tower in sight, and start walking.
Every great journey begins with a destination in mind. Your tower may be a dream, a purpose, a career, a family, a cause, or a vision of the person you hope to become. You don’t need to know every turn in the road ahead. You only need a direction and the courage to take the first step.
Get equipped. Never stop learning. Fill your mind with knowledge, your heart with compassion, and your character with integrity. The world will change faster than you expect, and your greatest advantage will be your willingness to grow.
Get directions. Seek wisdom from those who have traveled before you. Learn from teachers, mentors, friends, colleagues, and even strangers. There is strength in asking questions, and there is no shame in admitting that you don’t have all the answers.
Get help when you need it. None of us reaches our destination alone. Behind every success story is a community of people who offered support, encouragement, and guidance. Be grateful for those people and be willing to be that person for someone else.
Read the signs. Pay attention to the opportunities, lessons, and warnings that life places in your path. Sometimes the smallest experiences carry the biggest messages.
But also—get lost.
Some of the most meaningful discoveries happen when things don’t go according to plan. The wrong turn, the unexpected challenge, the opportunity you never anticipated—these moments often shape us more than the paths we carefully mapped out.
Be kind to people. Long after others forget your achievements, they will remember how you made them feel. Success without kindness is hollow. Treat people with respect, generosity, and empathy. The world always needs more of that.
Explore. Stay curious. Ask questions. Travel when you can. Listen to different perspectives. Step beyond what is familiar. Some of the most inspiring people you will ever meet are those who never stopped learning from the world around them.
And above all, enjoy the journey.
There will be moments of triumph and moments of doubt. There will be days when the tower seems distant and the road feels steep. On those days, remember that progress is not measured only by how far you’ve come, but by your willingness to keep moving forward.
An ancient proverb reminds us that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Today is one of those steps.
Thank you.
Following Harrow tradition, the graduates came forward one by one, touched the brims of their caps to honour their teachers, and then received their hard-earned graduation certificates.
Regina and Michael, as Head Girl & Head Boy, looked back on the moments since Harrow Shenzhen was founded – the late nights in the library, the forgotten lines on stage, the sweat of competing side by side on the sports field. They thanked their teachers for every careful lesson, their parents for every quiet moment of support, and their peers for every warm embrace.

Class of 2026
To all of you — those already gone and those moving forward now — I hope we gave you something back. I hope that somewhere in these years, us Y13 warriors, were a memorable moment for you too. A reason Harrow Shenzhen was worth it. Because you were that for us.
But before we leave — I want us to thank one more person. Someone we rarely think to acknowledge.
Ourselves.
Thank you for every sleepless night you pushed through. For building up the courage to do something for the very first time, even when your hands were shaking; for letting go of a grudge when it would have been so much easier to hold on; for doing the uncool or inconvenient thing because you knew, that it was the right thing to do.
Michael
Class of 2026
Along this journey, two groups stood firmly beside us the entire way, and I want to offer my sincere gratitude on behalf of the entire Year 13 cohort.
To teachers, tutors, and all school staff: Thank you for delivering engaging, high-quality lessons, spending time on last-minute interview preps, polishing our personal statements, and standing by us with emotional support.
To all the parents here today: Thank you for your endless patience, unconditional love, and constant encouragement.
To the Year 13 Warriors: I love you all; no one survived Year 13 alone.
