Since its launch in 2023,
Harrow Shenzhen’s TEDx journey
has revealed a fundamental truth
about education:
when students are entrusted with a stage, what they create often exceeds all expectations.
We have seen successive groups of
students move from behind-the-scenes
planning into the spotlight.
This year, Harrow Shenzhen students
transformed “What IF” into reality.

Eight “What Ifs” : Portraits
of Thinkers in the Spotlight
Isaac Y.:
Redefining “Good Enough”
“What if we were already good enough?” Isaac’s opening question spoke directly to a deep anxiety shared by many Harrow students. Through his football aspirations, setbacks, and family comparisons, he traced how the “I’m not good enough” mindset takes root. On the path to excellence, he invited everyone to first make peace with themselves—perhaps we already carry a light that shines on its own.

Jasmine C.:
Tearing Off the “Weird” Label
“What if the word ‘weird’ didn’t exist?” Drawing on her experience, Jasmine explored how social labels shape self-perception. Her talk gently embraced diversity, reminding us that being different is not a flaw but our most precious identity.

Chloe M.: The Boundary
Between Reality and Illusion
When Chloe posed the philosophical question, “What if everything was an illusion?”, the audience was drawn into deep reflection. Using metaphors from The Matrix, she challenged our certainty about “reality”—some questions simply have no definitive answers. Her insight was that what we perceive does not exist naturally. Rather, it is constantly constructed through cognition, rules, and imagination.

Irene X.:
Late-Night Thoughts on the “Self”
“What if you stopped being you?” Irene’s question struck at the core of identity. In an era where social media shapes multiple personas, she guided the audience to seek their most authentic self. She encouraged them to discover what remains unchanged amid constant flux.

Angela Z.:
Truth in a World of Lies
“What if everyone were lying?” Through snapshots of campus life, Angela revealed how deceit erodes relationships and dissolves trust. Her reflection served as a poignant call for sincerity. She sought for an anchor of truth in a world where the real and the false are hard to distinguish.

Hardy Z.:
Seeing the “Invisible” Force
“What if the ‘invisible drummer’ was actually the real leader of the band?” Hardy turned his gaze to the unsung heroes backstage. His talk honoured those who support quietly—the most vital rhythms often come from the quietest corners. To him, true leadership doesn’t seek the spotlight. It lies in making every beat the pulse that moves the band forward.

Angela C.:
When AI Becomes the Judge
“What if your judge was AI?” Angela transported us into the courtroom of the future. As algorithms increasingly shape our lives, she posed critical questions about justice, ethics, and humanity. When algorithms hold absolute authority, the warmth and capacity for correction in justice may freeze along with them.

Dr Knox:
The Future of Education
As the first teacher to take the Harrow Shenzhen TEDx stage, Principal Deputy Head Dr Knox asked, “What if education was completely reimagined?” With the rapid advancement of AI technology, he recognised that traditional educational models can no longer fully meet the demands of the times. From an educator’s perspective, he envisioned a learning future driven by curiosity and moving beyond standardised assessments.

Beyond Talks:
Magic and Music on Stage
Amid waves of ideas, Lucas L.—runner-up in the Shenzhen Magic Competition—delivered a visual surprise with his magic act. The “flying magic dove” not only showcased his skill but also symbolised how imagination can transcend physical boundaries. On the TEDx stage, anything is possible.
Closing the event was the band THE FOONS, led by Headmaster Daniel Berry. Their fresh renditions of classics like Jamming and Don’t Speak showcased the musical talent of Harrow’s faculty and provided a rhythmic finale to this gathering of minds.

Five Editions of TEDx
—Only the Beginning
This feast of ideas, ignited by “What IF”, ultimately yielded something even more valuable than answers: the courage to question, the power of collaboration, and the ability to turn ideas into reality.
The spotlight may fade for now,
but the thinking never stops.
Next year, the stage will welcome
a new group of Harrow Shenzhen students,
each carrying their own “What IF”.
The best education always happens
when students take the initiative
to create their own learning experience
—as it has for the past five years,
and as it will continue
to do in the future.
